The End of A Horrible Era - Roe Finally Overturned
Last week, as Catholics celebrated the Sacred Heart of Jesus, the Supreme Court voted 5-4 to finally overturn Roe v. Wade; ending a 50 year legacy that protected the "right" of one person to murder another person for profit for the convenience of one or both of the victim's parents.
Before Roe was decided in 1973, physicians around the world were quickly getting a fuller grasp on just how unique a new life was inside of his or her mother's womb. With the passage of the Civil Rights act and Women's suffrage in the decades before, the United States had been slowly expanding its definition and understanding of personhood and it was appearing as through the country may soon recognize the personhood of unborn children.
Unfortunately, this coincided with the "sexual revolution" and, with it, the need for reliable birth control. Condoms could fail. Birth control pills could fail. Murdering the person in the womb would not fail.
The Supreme Court Justices in 1973 knew the outcome they sought, they just needed to write an opinion that falsified historical context and ignored scientific evidence showing the unique personhood of the human sacrifice. Once precedence had been established, overturning the decision would be almost impossible.
It's no secret that I'm not a huge fan of President Trump, but to his credit, his appointments to the Supreme Court came through in an epic way; which undoubtedly makes the sting of the decision that much worse for the supporters of abortion.
Yet, the fight is not over. Not by a long shot is this fight over.
As I was listening to the radio coverage of this event, someone used the analogy: "Overturning Roe was like scaling the castle wall. It's tough and seemingly impossible, but once you get over that wall, that's when the real fighting begins."
Overturning Roe means that the people now have the option to allow or ban abortions through their state governments, and we'll see that in around 24 to 29 states. However, most of the population of the United States will still live in states that will still allow abortion. As people who understand the value and sacred nature of every life, the goal now is to create a culture that celebrates this miracle of life and cherishes life in every stage of its existence, from conception until its natural conclusion.
That means supporting and loving single mothers and erasing all the sigmas against them once and for all, reforming the social work industry, investing more in education and mental health of all Americans, and making sure pregnancy centers have the resources they need to support every unplanned pregnancy that would have otherwise ended in an abortion.
With the disastrous decision in Roe now overturned, the political end game for us is now the ratification of a Constitutional Amendment protecting human life and defining personhood from the moment of conception. It may not seem like we'll see this happen in our lifetime, but to be honest, I never thought I would see Roe overturned in my lifetime, either.
Miracles happen! Keep praying for them!
