Huckabee Gave 1,103 Convicts Clemency: 9% Re-Offended

In 1972, DuMond and two other men kidnapped a 17-year-old girl, used her to call her father, and the three men beat the man to death in Oklahoma. Although DuMond confessed to beating the man, he was allowed to walk in exchange for testimony in court. In 1973, he was convicted of molesting a teenage girl in Tacoma, WA and served 5 years. In 1984, DuMond raped another teenage girl - she was a cousin of then-Governor Bill Clinton. Huckabee granted him clemency in 1999, which resulted in his speedy release from prison. A year later, he raped and murdered a 39-year-old pregnant mother named Carol Sue Shields. In 2001, he raped and murdered a teenage girl named Sara Andrasek. He died of cancer in a Missouri prison. Among these 1,103 convicted criminals who were shown compassion by Governor Huckabee; 12 were murderers and many more were convicted of rape or another assault charge. Seven were convicted of Driving Under the Influence, including Eugene Fields, whose wife donated at least $10,000 to the Republican Party of Arkansas less than a year prior to his release. When Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) protested, Huckabee attacked the group for being politically motivated and "fan[ning] the flames of controversy that have been stirred in this case by the unusual curiosity of certain media members." After all, why would Mothers Against Drunk Driving be against Huckabee giving a ridiculously early release to a convicted drunk driver? On the paperwork Huckabee filed where the Governor had to explain why he was recommending Fields be released, (there are 4 check boxes to choose from), Huckabee wrote "N/A" for Not Applicable. I guess there wasn't a check box for "Spouse donated $10,000 to my political party."

Not long after his release from prison, Eugene Fields was again caught driving under the influence. Fields was just one of many re-offenders granted clemency by Mike Huckabee. In fact, at least 9% of these convicts have since returned to prison. Wade Stewart is another example of that. Stewart was convicted of murder and sentenced to life in prison. During his shortened stay in his Arkansas Prison, he racked up 35 disciplinary marks against his record. In other words, this guy was a hardened criminal with no intention of repenting anytime soon. Stewart was disciplined multiple times for battery, lying to the prison staff, possession of money, using abusive language, possession of gambling paraphernalia, unauthorized contact with the public, destruction and taking of state property, disrupting or breaking into a line, possession of contraband, and throwing or spitting fluid. After his release, he was later arrested and convicted again on a weapons charges and felony theft.

In 2004, Huckabee helped earn "Jim" Maxwell's release. James Maxwell was convicted of carjacking a Reverend, but when he resisted, Maxwell shot the man of God three times with his stolen firearm. You wouldn't think a Baptist Minister would want this guy to be released, but James Maxwell was an employee in the Governor's Mansion under Mike Huckabee at the time of the incident. Although Huckabee refuses to comment on his relationship, when Reverend Billy Price Bennett's family met with the Governor to protest his decision, Huckabee refused and referred to the convict as "Jim" throughout the meeting.

Huckabee's disregard for public safety is HORRIFYING. In the case of Don Jeffers; who pleaded guilty to murdering William Hash by knocking him over, removing his prosthetic leg, and beating him to death with it; when Huckabee suggested he be immediately released on parole, the prosecutor in the case protested. He recommended Governor Huckabee review his guidelines and procedures for vetting and granting clemency to inmates.

The response came from Cory Cox, the governor's deputy legal counsel and adviser on criminal justice. It was just three sentences long:

"The governor read your letter and laughed out loud. He wanted me to respond to you. I wish you success as you cut down your caffeine consumption."
